Guru ki Vadali is the birthplace of the Sixth Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, the son of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. To celebrate the birth of his son, Guru Arjan Dev Ji constructed a big well at this place. This well had six Persian wheels to draw out the water and thus came to be known as Chheharta, the well with six wheels. This well helped in removing water scarcity in the region and enabled the greening of the fields.
Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib is located at a distance of 7 km from Amritsar near the village of Guru Ki Wadali. The 6th Sikh guru, Guru Hargobind Singh Ji, was born in this village. To celebrate his son’s birthday, Guru Arjan Dev Ji constructed a big well called Chheharta at this site. The well, which earlier had six Persian wheels to draw the water out, is now covered, but its water is still pumped to feed the main tank at the site.
Named after the ancient well, this sprawling Gurudwara encompasses a divan hall that holds a square sanctum in the midst. Above the sanctum is a lotus dome, the pinnacle of which is plated with gold. In front of the divine hall front are two 25 m tall flag posts, each of which is hoisted by Sikh flags called Nishan Sahib. Managed by the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, this Gurudwara is a recommended tourist spot.
